Kiteboarding Spot Infos for Playa del Carmen – Mexico. Wind, Weather, Spotinfo, Accomodation Suggestion, …

Overview

Playa Del Carmen is right in the middle of the world known Riviera Maya, which runs from south of Cancun to Tulum and the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve. The Riviera Maya, also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 307 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatan peninsula.

The major attractions throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef aquatic activities dependent on the coastal water and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which begins near Cancun and continues along the whole length of the Riviera Maya continuing southward to Guatemala. This barrier reef system is the second longest in the world.

Originally a small fishing town, Playa del Carmen, or just “Playa” as called by the Locals, became a world famous Scuba Diving destination and rapidly developed over the past few years with many new luxury residential condominium buildings, restaurants, boutiques and entertainment venues.

Activities at the most visited locations include Jet skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming in cenotes, swimming with dolphins, zip lining, horse riding, sailing, guided jungle tours and recently kiteboarding.

Accomodation in Playa del Carmen for kiteboarders

Sandos Playacar Resort
If you are coming to learn and take your IKO certification course, if you like All inclusive Resorts, if you want your family doing their own activities few feet away from the Kite area or if you just want to be as close as possible from the Kiteboarding School and spot, the best option for you is to stay at the Sandos Playacar Resort which is right next to the spot.

Other accomodation around Playa del Carmen
If you prefer small hotels downtown (only 7min by taxi to get to the Kite school/spot), there are hundreds of them right in the center of Playa del Carmen.

Here are two that I can especially recommend as a tip from a local guy:

Wind, weather & waves

The Wind season is from October till the end of May. You should be able to ride 4/5 days a week during this period. Wind is usually from 13 to 22 Knots on the Caribbean coast and works with NE, E, SE and S. NE wind is usually the best as it is a bit colder, denser and pulls much more. When the wind turns North (Called here “El Norte”), it blows from 25 to 35+ knots, and then you need to go to Isla Blanca Lagoon north of Cancun (ask PDC Kiteboarding about Lagoon excursion).

Kite-Spots, Map

The kite spot is located south the Sandos Playacar Resort. Check out the detailed spot info below and the detailed location on the map.

Sandos Playacar Resort / PDC Kiteboarding School

The beach of the Sandos Playacar Resort in the Playacar Hotel Zone is the main Kiteboarding Spot in the Area and also the only Authorized Kite beach and School of Playa del Carmen. Starting from the Sandos Playacar Resort toward south, you will find a designated mile long white sandy Kiteboarding beach with no rocks, no obstacles and a lot of space to rig and launch/Land your Kites.

Right on spot is PDC Kiteboarding School, the only Authorized kiteboarding School of Playa del Carmen, which offers IKO beginner courses with International certifications, Equipment rental and supervision, Equipment sale and Demos.

The staff is very friendly and speaks up to 6 different languages. On site you will find toilets, Shower and fresh water tank to rinse your gear off.

Beach Description Playa del Carmen

XcalacocoPoint

15 min north of Playa del Carmen , at the Coca Cola offices on the Federal road, take a right (coming from PDC) and follow up all the way to the beach. This is XCALACOCO Point. This is not an Authorized Kite spot but a lot of Locals come here as this is one of the best break for Waves Kitesurfing.

The entrance and exit from the water is very tight and risky (very shallow reef) so be very careful. The beach is also tiny so you will have to get someone helping you to Launch or Land your kite. Once in the water, the shallow reef south of the entrance point gives some very nice rolling waves to play with, specially with NE wind. You can find some very nice flat water area riding upwind toward North. Again, this is NOT an Authorized kite spot and there are a lot of resorts and swimmers so be very careful and keep your distance from shore and watercrafts.

Your destination Airport is Cancun. Flights are directly coming in from Europe but of course also plenty of flights from USA and CANADA.

Crime & Security

Playa del Carmen is the safest town in Mexico and part of the safest state, Quintana Roo. This is a place where you can walk alone at night without the fear of having something happen to you. People are friendly and will help you out anytime. Make sure anyway that you stay in the area between the Federal Highway and the beach, there is no much to do or see further west except going to visit a Cenote or going on a Jungle tour and you will have a guide in this case.

General travel information

Playa del Carmen is one of the fastest growing and most fun towns in the Caribbean. Its central location makes it convenient to all the sights & adventures on Mexico’s tropical Caribbean coastline. Water sports are available in Playa del Carmen including swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, para-sailing, sky diving and more. Great shopping and restaurants can be found along Playa del Carmen’s “Quinta Avenida” (5th Avenue) pedestrian promenade.
